The Bestie

Book Club

Join a group of likeminded women to meet monthly, discussing a new book. More than the text, we like to discuss the topics addressed in each book. More than anything, we like to have a good time, encouraging the act of self care through reading.

Meet Your New Besties

Best friends since the age of eleven, Amirah and Attilah are known throughout each others lives like sisters. Reading has always been a huge part of their friendship. Attilah worked at a book store growing up, Amirah grew up and starting writing her own stories. Together, they host the Bestie Book Club monthly.

Memphis,
by Tara M. Springfellow

Summer 1995: Ten-year-old Joan, her mother, and her younger sister flee her father’s explosive temper and seek refuge at her mother’s ancestral home in Memphis. This is not the first time violence has altered the course of the family’s trajectory. Half a century earlier, Joan’s grandfather built this majestic house in the historic Black neighborhood of Douglass—only to be lynched days after becoming the first Black detective in the city. Joan tries to settle into her new life, but family secrets cast a longer shadow than any of them expected.

Past Selections from The Bestie Book Club

Every month, we email you with the month's pick. Then, at the end of the month, we meet online to discuss not only the book, but the issues within it. Reading and discussing these titles every month is a fun dose of self care, and intentional alone time.

Finding Me

If it's good enough for Oprah's Book Club, it's good enough for the Bestie Book Club!

This pick got us all talking about our own personal journeys in an introspective conversation.

You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty

It’s been five years since the accident that killed the love of her life and she’s almost a new person now—an artist with her own studio, and sharing a brownstone apartment with her ride-or-die best friend, Joy, who insists it’s time for Feyi to ease back into the dating scene.

The Gilded Ones

The start of our first series in the book club, we were excited to start the spring with Gilded Ones, knowing that the follow-up 'Merciless Ones' would be released soon after.

The Merciless Ones

The Besties were eager to continue the story in the sequel to 'The Gilded Ones'. Word is this will be a trilogy, so we're on the lookout for the finale book.

Black Cake Book Club

Black Cake

A fan favorite, Black Cake was an intricate story covering generations in a layered family story.

We had a great time discussing this book and the issues it brought to the surface.

We Are Not Like Them

Not one of the favorites for the book club, but often we find the best conversations come from the books we didn't love.

Let's just say, there were some strong opinions.

Year of Yes

A young Nigerian Canadian finds herself at a crossroads of love and culture, forced to pick which is most important in this contemporary romance.

This Close to Okay

Great writing made this a page turner that led to interesting conversation. It's enough drama and suspense without becoming too heavy of a read.

I Almost Forgot About You

Written by the icon Terry McMillan, this was a fun an easy read. The star of the book, Georgia, is interested in reconnecting with the loves of her life.

7 Days in June

A modern romance that was a Bestie favorite featured the arguably toxic love story of two writers, separated by a decade of silence.
